We set out to capture the passion and dedication behind a sport that remains largely unrecognised: competitive esports. While spending time on set with the players, we witnessed their commitment firsthand and began to understand the full scope of their vision. The Oxford University Gaming and Esports Society (OUGES) are pioneers—championing an unexpected new discipline at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Our goal was to challenge the stigma surrounding gaming and show why Oxford has invested so significantly in it. The answer? Esports fosters critical 21st-century skills like teamwork, strategic thinking, and digital literacy.

The details
What sets esports apart is its accessibility. Unlike traditional sports such as football, tennis, or F1. Where only elite teams compete at the highest levels—esports offers a level playing field. Any team, regardless of size or status, can compete on the global stage. Oxford now has the chance to go head-to-head with teams equivalent to Liverpool or Barcelona—an opportunity rarely available in conventional sports.
